Kelly Clarkson opens up about scary pregnancy complications

by

When most Hollywood celebs talk about pregnancy, typically words like “glow,” “amazing,” “honor” and “beautiful” are used. “I feel so #blessed to be carrying this little being, and I pretty much poop purple fairy dust each day” is a sentiment we’re used to hearing. OK, maybe not that verbatim, but along those lines.

So when a celebrity — like Kelly Clarkson — speaks out on how, well, terrible pregnancy can be, mamas who didn’t or aren’t having a “beautiful” experience can breathe a sigh of relief that they’re not alone.

In a recent interview with CBS This Morning, Clarkson revealed just how bad her morning sickness is. To be blunt, it sounds like hell on Earth. And apparently Clarkson experienced the same thing when she was pregnant with her first. It’s amazing that she decided to have another after what she went through.

“I’m familiar with all-day sickness,” Clarkson said on the show. “I have to get IVs and fluids because I get so dehydrated. It’s really bad.” Clarkson, who’s expecting a boy, admitted that when she was pregnant with her daughter, River Rose Blackstock, she battled the same issues.

When Clarkson appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in December of 2013, this was how she described pregnancy:

I vomit a good dozen times a day. It’s, like, bad. I vomited before coming out here. I’m not even kidding. It’s so bad. It’s so bad. It’s, like, so gross. And that’s the thing, too: You’re not attractive when you’re pregnant. Everybody tells you [that] you glow and your hair is pretty and your nails are pretty. That is total crap. My nails are short, my hair still falls out — it’s not all lush and beautiful — and I have no glow. Unless it’s, like, something left over from a bad throw up. It’s horrible.

Yikes. Doesn’t sound fun at all — and doesn’t sound quite like so many of the other pregnancies we hear about in Hollywood. Of course, pregnancy is different for everyone — no two experiences are alike — but when we hear about people like Clarkson; Kate Middleton, who experienced extreme morning sickness with both of her pregnancies; and Kim Kardashian, who’s flat-out said that pregnancy is “the worst experience of her life,” we see that it isn’t always all sunshine and roses. Even for celebrities.

Having children is the greatest experience of one’s life — there’s likely not a parent out there who would disagree. But carrying the child isn’t necessarily a great experience for everyone. Sometimes women are shamed or labeled “complainers” for not basking in the glow of pregnancy, but when we hear about an experience like Clarkson’s, it’s easy to understand why there isn’t any basking happening. Imagine throwing up over a dozen times a day? Nothing beautiful about that.

Of course, all this said, Clarkson (and Middleton) is also the unofficial poster child for something else: the fact that kids are amazing and totally worth every swollen ankle, sleepless night and trip to the bathroom. They’re incredible. And clearly if Clarkson went ahead and got pregnant for the second time after such an awful experience the first time around, she thinks so too.

What was your pregnancy experience like? Did you have morning sickness?
