The Rock’s baby name has plenty of flower power

“Little Rock,” aka the newest addition to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and longtime girlfriend Lauren Hashian’s family, is finally here, arriving a few weeks early. Johnson and Hashian have just announced their new daughter’s simply sweet name that falls somewhere between traditional and unique.

Johnson and Hashian welcomed baby Jasmine on Dec. 16, and sources report that both mom and daughter are doing great. While the couple has yet to confirm their reason for choosing the name, it’s heartwarming to see that they’ve picked a name for their new daughter that complements her older sister, Simone, Johnson’s 14-year-old daughter from a previous marriage.

Peaking in popularity in the 1990s (not-so-coincidentally around the same time that Disney’s Aladdin hit the screen), Jasmine has fallen back into the more “unique” baby name category since we don’t see it used too often in the new millennium. Just like the movie Aladdin suggests, Jasmine is a Persian baby name that comes from the jasmine flower. Jasmine is a colorful, fragrant tropical plant that is often used to make teas and perfumes — an elegant name Johnson’s daughter is sure to grow into.

Case in point, Michael Jordan named his daughter Jasmine Mickael at the height of the ‘90s Jasmine buzz, born in 1992. Martin Lawrence’s daughter Jasmine Page was born in 1996. In the ‘90s, Diane Lane also chose the feminine name for her daughter — this time, as a middle name for Eleanor Jasmine born in 1993.

In the 2000s, we may not see as many little Jasmines running around, but we do see plenty of celebs who continue to embrace the floral motif in their baby name choices. Meg Ryan kept the trend alive in the early 2000s with her daughter Daisy True, born in 2004.

Scarlett Johansson brought a classic flower-inspired name back to the forefront when she named her daughter Rose Dorothy in 2014, and Rachel Bilson incorporated the same name when her daughter Briar Rose was born the same year. And who could forget about celebrity chef Jamie Oliver’s famous affection for flowers? His three daughters are named Poppy, Petal and Daisy.

We may have to wait a few weeks until these new parents start getting some sleep at night to find out why they chose such a beautiful throwback of a name for their new daughter. But there’s one thing we do know — Johnson has already proven to be a parenting trendsetter with his hush-hush gender reveal on Instagram. Don’t be surprised if you start to see more “blooming” baby names on your Facebook feed.
