The Vampire Diaries star gives baby an old lady name

It’s a girl for The Vampire Diaries star Candice Accola King! She and her husband, Joe King, welcomed their first child together on Jan. 15.

They announced her arrival with a sweet picture on Instagram of her little toes and a blanket that spelled out the name they gave her: Florence May King.

It’s such a sweet throwback name that reminds you of a flower, an exotic vacation or a sweet aunt or grandmother. These kind of vintage names have been increasingly popular in recent years, making “old-lady” names downright chic.

While it can also be used as a name for a boy, the meaning for the girl name is “flourishing or prosperous.” While the name hasn’t entered the top 1,000 names in the past couple of decades, it has risen in popularity overseas, sitting at number 54 in the U.K. So we wouldn’t be surprised if we see more of it in coming years.

It’s pretty, unique and lends itself to sweet nicknames like Flora or Flo. May is a perfect punch of brightness in the middle.

As for why they chose Florence? They haven’t commented on that specifically, but the fact that they got engaged in Florence, Italy, gives us a pretty good guess. What a lovely way to pay tribute to their love.
