When James Madison took office in 1809 as the fourth president of the United States, there is little doubt that he had no inkling that two centuries later, his last name would be a top-10 baby name — for girls. While most surnames are used by parents of baby boys as first names, there is still magic to be had along those lines for baby girls.
More: These nicknames make even better baby names for girls
It’s a little more difficult to fish “girly” names out of a sea of masculine-sounding last names — so many of these choices may seem gender-neutral or even outright boyish. Don’t let that stop you, though, from using one for your little girl. Boyish names are certainly a legit trend for parents of baby girls, and some of these surnames sound a bit feminine already all on their own.
You probably know a Madison or two (a name which finally appeared in the top 1,000 baby names in 1985, after a certain mermaid named Madison appeared in the popular 1984 film Splash), and probably a little girl named Addison. Aubrey is already a strong girl name, as is MacKenzie. But some of these clever monikers may sound new, like Ellery, Everly and Sloane — and they’re all awesome.
See if any of these terrific surnames might look perfect atop your baby name list.
