Netflix has changed family movie night forever. No longer do you have to pack everyone into the car and head out to the video store where everyone wanders around trying to agree on a movie to watch. Now you can fight over what to watch on family movie night without so much as leaving your couch.
To make it even easier, our friends at Netflix provide these awesome hacks that will make viewing your favorite content even easier. Unfortunately, none help keep your kids from fighting.
Disable auto-play
Keep the kids from sneaking in one more episode by disabling auto-play. Just go to your playback setting and uncheck the box.
Family movie night profile
Don’t let Dad’s love for cult sci-fi flicks influence your Netflix recommendations for family movie night. Create a “family” profile to discover more titles that everyone can agree on.
Personalize the experience
Pink’s your favorite color? You can change the color and font of your subtitles and make it a little more your style.
Befriend the kids profile
The Netflix kids profile ensures your little ones are only served up age-appropriate content on the service. Added bonus? The background of the kids’ Netflix profile is light blue vs. the typical black, so you can make sure your little one hasn’t stumbled upon not-safe-for-kids content while you’re in the kitchen prepping dinner.
Discover new genres
Kids love ‘Talking Animals’ or ‘Spooky Stories’? In your browser, click on row names on the homepage to see a full gallery of TV shows and movies within that genre.
Other ideas:
Personalize your profile icon photo.
Netflix plans on producing over 600 hours of original content in 2016. Type “Netflix” into the search bar to see a complete list of Netflix originals, all in one place.
If you own an Ultra HD TV, type “4K” in the search bar to see a full list of TV shows and movies available in 4K resolution.
If you’re worried about data usage, you can manually adjust the streaming rate by hopping into Netflix’s secret menu. You can access it on the desktop by pressing Shift+Alt+Left Click. Alternatively, head to your Netflix account settings and choose Manage Video Quality and select one of three options. (If you want high-def to be your default, select High.)
These five keyboard shortcuts will help you navigate Netflix like a pro:
- F will give you full screen; Esc will take you out of it
- PgDn pauses, PgUp will play
- The spacebar will also pause and play
- Shift + Right Arrow will fast forward; Shift + Left Arrow will rewind
- M should toggle your mute button, depending on your computer
