Dad faces police investigation for confronting his kids’ bullies

Most parents would do anything to protect their kids, and we hope the authorities would also step up to the plate and do whatever is in their power to keep kids safe. That’s never truer than when it comes to bullying. If we could watch over our kids 24/7, it simply wouldn’t happen. But that’s impossible to so, and we need to trust that teachers and others responsible for our children will act in their best interests and do everything in their power to put a stop to any bullying behavior.

Unfortunately that wasn’t the case for one dad, 37-year-old Christopher Cooper from Wales. After his daughter Millie and son Braiden were repeatedly tormented for over a year, he confronted the bullies himself, claiming that the school and local police had failed to intervene. Cooper allegedly told the perpetrators to “leave his kids alone,” and he now faces charges of intimidation. In a lengthy Facebook post, he gave details of the bullying behavior, which began when Millie and Braiden started at their new school just over a year ago, revealing that the “verbal and physical assaults” got so bad that he fears Millie “is on the verge of having an eating disorder” and Braiden suffered a broken arm.

What does it say about society when two young kids have to suffer vicious abuse for an entire year, and when their dad tries to make the bullies stop, he is the one being labeled a criminal? Whatever anti-bullying policies a school has in place, whatever measures it takes in response to allegations of bullying, if the abuse continues, then things are not working. It’s not enough to just follow some steps decided on in a management meeting. Policies and guidelines aren’t worth the paper they’re written on if they don’t achieve the desired outcome.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a parent who wouldn’t do what Cooper did if they were in his shoes. What other choice did he have? Beyond the school and the police, there’s nobody else he could have turned to for help, and they both failed miserably at protecting the real victims in this case.
