Dear Mama by Tupac is probably what you think of first when you think of rap songs devoted to moms, and it’s a great song, but there are others out there, including Apparently by J. Cole, which is an honest look into how we can all be better to our long-suffering moms, sometimes.

Here’s something that pretty much every mom can relate to: the havoc that bearing a child wreaks on both your body and your self-esteem. Hot Mama is a sweet(?) song about still being able to rev your baby daddy’s engine, even with all of the stretch marks.

Nothing was more popular in the late ’90s and early aughts than a sweet — if not a little navel-gazing — ballad to the stage moms that made all of it possible. There was no way the Backstreet Boys weren’t going to hop all over that.

Sure, it’s a little glurge-y, but all of the best mom songs are, aren’t they? There’s something special about a mother-daughter relationship, and McBride manages to raise the point (and a whole bunch of goosebumps) with this one.
