If you think Sean Penn and Robin Wright’s son Hopper has an unusual name, wait until you hear what his dad really wanted to call him.

In an interview with Interview magazine, 22-year-old actor and model Hopper revealed that his name was inspired by actor and filmmaker Dennis Hopper, whom his dad “was friendly with” and “idolized.” Also, Wright said said he “hopped in her stomach” instead of kicking. Cute!
However, Hopper wasn’t Penn Senior’s first choice of baby name. He wanted to go for something a little more… flavorsome?
Steak Penn has quite a ring to it, but it’s perhaps something you’d expect to see written on a restaurant menu rather than a birth certificate.
“My dad wanted to name me Steak, the food, because he loves it so much,” said Hopper. “But my mom was never going to go for it.”

If Hopper had been named Steak, he’d join a long line of celebrity babies named after food. Drew Barrymore and Will Kopelman have a daughter named Olive. My Chemical Romance guitarist Frank Iero has a daughter named Cherry. Bear Grylls has a son named Huckleberry. General Hospital star Ingo Rademacher has a son named Peanut. Ethan Hawke has a daughter named Clementine. Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin have a daughter named Apple.
But there’s something about Steak that sets it apart from all of these. Perhaps it’s the fact that it’s a thick slice of beef taken from the hindquarters of an animal and then grilled or fried.
Nope, we can’t see this one appearing in the baby name books any time soon.
