Skyla’s entrance into the world was heavily documented. Gries updated her followers live on Snapchat for 24 hours until the big moment arrived, and she introduced her daughter to the world in a starry-eyed Instagram post:
Skyla is a name of Dutch origin that means “scholar” or “learned one.” In spot number 557, it’s not a very common name, but the heavenly name (get it?) has been on a steady rise since it first appeared in the top 1,000 in 1998.
Little Skyla will be in good company, though. She shares a name with ballerina Skyla Schreter and a more popular variation of her moniker — Skylar — with Pitch Perfect actor Skylar Astin. It’s also highly adorable that little Skyla has a name that is visually similar to her mother’s.

Some parents pick their children’s names based on the way they sound, and others go straight for a tag with a significant meaning. Portia, for instance, sounds absolutely lovely, but you don’t choose it for its literal meaning, which is “pig.” Skyla, by comparison, is a name we don’t hear much but that has a lovely meaning — “wise” or “learned” — that puts it in the same category as studious names like Ramona, Minerva, Cato and Albus.

Whatever Skyla’s future is, it’s sure to be very bright indeed and definitely thoroughly documented!
