So, not many parents use a vintage assault weapon as a prop for their baby picture. But Bristol Palin isn’t afraid of controversy, so that’s exactly what she’s done.

Palin’s Instagram post showing her husband, Dakota Meyer, and their 6-month-old daughter, Sailor, grinning behind the gun has triggered a passionate debate online.

The caption has added fuel to the fire: “Future member of the NRA.” The response to Palin’s picture is mixed. One commenter described the picture as “frightening” and “scary,” while others have applauded the fact that Palin and Meyer are “raising [Sailor] right, with conservative beliefs.”
Whatever way you look at it, this comes down to politics. If you agree with Palin and Meyer’s pro-gun stance, you’ll dig this picture (or at the very least, won’t be bothered by it). If you don’t, you won’t.

It’s not surprising that many people find an image of a 6-month-old baby with a gun as a photo prop shocking. But you have to view it in context. Meyer is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and served in Afghanistan. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Ganjgal on September 8, 2009, in Kunar province, Afghanistan.
With everything that has happened recently, both on home soil and abroad — the shooting at an Orlando nightclub last month, the murders of police officers in Dallas last week and the Bastille Day attack in Nice, France, just last night — it’s no wonder that many people are sensitive to guns, and particularly so when children are involved. But a mother taking a photo of her baby beside a gun isn’t a threat to national security.
