MTV star Rob Dyrdek’s gives his baby a very Kardashian name

Rob Dyrdek is a professional skateboarder, entrepreneur and reality star, and now he’s got another important job to add to his résumé: brand new dad. Dyrdek and his wife, Bryiana, welcomed a baby boy over the weekend, and in a sweet Instagram post, the pair revealed the new addition’s totally unique name.

“Say hello to Kodah Dash Dyrdek,” Rob wrote in his post. He went on to list off possible nicknames for the little boy, including Dash, KD, K-Dash and Da-Dah — let’s just say the kid will have plenty of options if he decides he isn’t happy going by Kodah. Either way, Dyrdek says he’s just “blessed and thankful” to have a healthy baby boy.

The name Kodah is so rare that it was ranked at No. 5,256 on last year’s U.S. baby name chart for boys. The name’s origin is unknown, but it might have roots in the musical term coda, which is the end section of a musical work that is distinct from the rest of the piece. It’s safe to say little KD might go his entire life without meeting anyone else who shares his unusual first name, but the same can’t be said for his parents’ middle name choice.

You might recognize the name Dash from Kourtney Kardashian’s son, Mason Dash Disick. It’s also the name of the Kardashian’s popular clothing store. When used as a baby name, it’s most closely associated with the Russian name Dasha, which means ” a gift from God.” Last year, Dash sat at No. 759 on the U.S. baby name chart, meaning it’s still uncommon, but not quite as unique as Kodah.

Dyrdek’s baby name choices might seem a little out there for the average kid, but by celebrity standards, they’re about as close to normal as one can get. Actress Jena Malone recently named her baby Ode Mountain, and former reality star Holly Madison named her daughter Rainbow Aurora. And of course, we can’t forget about Rapper Chief Keef’s son, Sno FilmOn Dot Com Cozart. Kodah Dash isn’t exactly a classic like John, but it’s still relatively recognizable.

Whether you love “weird” celebrity baby names or absolutely hate ’em, you have to admit, these stars have a knack for pushing us out of our comfort zones. Two decades ago, it would’ve been ludicrous to name a baby Apple. Now, thanks to Gwyneth Paltrow, it’s no longer such an outlandish proposition. In fact, most parents at least attempt to come up with a baby name that’s a little bit uncommon, even if we don’t start looking for inspiration in the fruit bowl.

At the end of the day, every baby name is just something we made up. The only thing that makes them “normal” or “traditional” is the number of people who use them. Kodah may be a rare choice now, but you never know when something will catch on and become a standard. Either way, congratulations to Rob and Bryiana on their stunning new arrival.
