Prince William talks about the highs and lows of parenting

No matter who you are, parenting is a tough gig. Even Prince William admits to having struggled at times since he became a father to Prince George, 3, and Princess Charlotte, 1, with Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge.

William was on a trip to Vietnam for the third International Conference on the Illegal Wildlife Trade when he opened up about having children, revealing what he’s learned about parenthood in the past few years.

“As the other parents in the room will testify, there’s wonderful highs and there’s wonderful lows,” he told English-language news show Talk Vietnam. “It’s been quite a change for me, personally. I’m very lucky in the support I have from Catherine. She is an amazing mother and a fantastic wife.”

However, he also admitted to struggling with the transition from being “a single, independent man” to a husband and dad-of-two. “I adore my children very much and I’ve learned a lot about myself and about a family, just from having my own children and it’s amazing how much you pick up from just in those moments,” he said.

William also talked about the differences between raising a son and a daughter. “Bearing in mind I’ve never had a sister, […] having a daughter is a very different dynamic,” he said. “So I’m learning about having a daughter and having a girl in the family.”

“He keeps me on my toes,” he added of “rascal” George. “But he’s a sweet boy.”

Prince George and Princess Charlotte will never want for anything, but their father is keen to bring them up to be anti-materialistic. “I think there’s a lot of huge aspirations and people living with an enormous amount of stuff that they don’t necessarily need,” he said. “The materialism of the world I find quite tricky sometimes.”

It’s a challenge all parents face: How do we raise our kids to be good, kind, grateful people when the world appears to be increasingly obsessed with stuff? Royal or not, Prince William is just like us. Maybe.
