Second-grader finds winning lotto ticket and uses it for good

Seven-year-old Phoebe Brown was running errands with her mother in Independence, Missouri, last week when she found a winning lottery ticket lying on the floor of the grocery store. “I stepped over a lottery ticket,” said Phoebe’s mom, Audrey, to KSHB News, “she sees it and grabs it up and said, ‘Mom, Mom, it’s a winner.’ And I’m like, ‘No, it’s not.'” Because it couldn’t be, right? No one just finds a winning lottery ticket at the Hy-Vee while they’re buying eggs. Except for Phoebe. Phoebe totally did.

Turns out, it was a winning scratch-off ticket worth $100.

When her mom asked her what she thought they should do with the money, Phoebe’s answer blew her away: “That day a flier came in from the school to help with… canned goods and non-perishable items, and she said, ‘Mom, Mom, can we do that?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah!'”

Most of us would like to think our kids would do something like this in the same situation, but aren’t entirely sure they would be able to resist the siren song of Toy “R” Us. So to see such a young child make such a selfless choice is inspiring.

Along with Phoebe’s father, Josh, who pledged to match whatever his daughter spent (apparently, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree in the Brown family), they went to Walmart and spent all the money on food to donate to the Sycamore Hills Elementary School’s Thanksgiving food drive. Said Josh: “You wonder if our kids these days, if that’s what they’re thinking. And this just goes to show you they are thinking that, and that’s a good thing.”

Phoebe’s class collected 541 cans of food — the most in the school. And as a prize for their good work, PE teacher Herb Horeman allowed the class to shave off his beard, which left the kids “squealing with delight.” That’s a good day for a really, really good kid.
