New Sesame Street Character Rudy Empowers Blended Families

The Sesame Street family keeps growing — and we are crazy about the newest resident on the block.

Rudy is a red-horned monster who is 3. He had his big debut on Saturday in the episode “Hello, Rudy,” when he was introduced as the brand-new stepbrother of Abby Cadabby. Abby’s mom married Rudy’s dad, and Rudy’s on board now as part of a storyline addressing the challenges — and the fun — of blended families.

Rudy already has some major-league fans. The cool little red monster got to hang with Jimmy Fallon recently and “help” Fallon with his thank-you notes (that’s around the 2:20 minute mark, for you impatient souls):

We really love Rudy’s message that families come in all shapes and sizes. Sesame Street Workshop had this to say about its newest character: “Families come in many forms — including newly blended families, which can present unique challenges for kids. As part of Sesame Street’s kindness curriculum, kids will watch as Abby and Rudy meet for the first time, get to know each other, and overcome their differences to embrace their new sibling relationship.”

Abby and Rudy appeared on Today last Friday to chat about life as new stepsiblings.

“All of us come from different places, right? But we all have something in common,” Abby said, citing their shared love of soccer. (Even Muppets have soccer parents.)

We’re already in love with this new family — and are grateful as ever to Sesame Street Workshop for always making sure its narratives reflect real kids — and real families — and empowering them no matter what the circumstance.
