Some very high-profile parents are experiencing a huge milestone this week: sending their firstborn off to college, likely supplied with extra-large twin sheets and plastic crates full of shoes, tangled computer cords and three months’ worth of body wash.
Earlier this week, our friends the Beckhams bid their eldest, Brooklyn, a weepy farewell (online and in person) as he headed off to Parsons in New York City. And now, the Beckhams should have the Obamas over for scones and tea (spiked with rum) to commiserate, since Barack and Michelle Obama just said goodbye to Malia. Sasha’s big sis is now busy getting settled in at her parents’ alma mater, Harvard University.

Daily Mail posted photos of the former POTUS and FLOTUS helping Malia move into an on-campus residence at the esteemed university one day before the rest of the teeming Harvard masses arrive for fall classes.
We don’t know how the Obamas are handling things, but Malia was already out and about with friends exploring Cambridge, Massachusetts, in full hipster-freshman regalia (Alexander Wang graphic tee and black slip dress with trendy white kicks, of course). Malia will have a little time to get her bearings — and maybe figure out how to shake the Secret Service — before classes begin on Wednesday, Aug. 30.

The former first daughter is a cool cat by all accounts, having postponed her Harvard education for a gap year to work internships at the U.S. Embassy in Spain and then in NYC at The Weinstein Company. Speaking of the latter, Malia is expected to study filmmaking at Harvard. And she’s no newbie; in addition to the Weinstein internship, she worked with Halle Berry in 2014 on the set of Extant, and in 2015 scored an internship on the set of Lena Dunham’s Girls.

Dunham raved over Malia to Howard Stern, “She’s an angel. Obviously, we weren’t making her go get our coffee. But she wanted to do all the jobs — that was the cool thing.”
Actually, we’re pretty convinced that “the cool thing” about Malia Obama is… all the things. Her parents and sister are no doubt going to miss her. But they’ll probably be keeping busy at “football” games with the Beckhams. They’ll be fine.
