The mystery has finally been put to rest, courtesy of the papa of the most famous twins on the planet.
Jay-Z revealed the real meanings behind his twins’ names Rumi and Sir, during a podcast interview released on Aug. 25.
The podcast,Rap Radar with hosts Elliott Wilson and Brian “B.Dot” Miller, scored big-time when Jay-Z decided he was in the mood to talk about the twins he shares with wife Beyoncé. (Perhaps you’ve heard of her? No? Not so much?)
If you know what a computer is, you might already know that the internet did not breathe for nine months as it impatiently awaited the birth of the power couple’s twins, born on June 14.

Everyone now knows their names — originally reported as Bea and Shawn, puh-leeeeeease, we were so not buying it — are Rumi and Sir.
(Yes, sir. That kind of “sir,” sir.)
But why?
Jay-Z kindly cleared things up once and for all on the topic of the twins’ names. “Rumi is our favorite poet, so it was for our daughter,” he said on the podcast. (Never mind that Rumi was a dude born in 1207 in Tajikistan. Celebrities can totally skip over details like that.)
Jay-Z continued, somewhat confusingly, “And then Sir was, like, man, come out the gate. He carries himself like that. He just came out, like, Sir.”
We’re not sure what gate Jay-Z’s referring to, but we think we get the gist: Sir has some serious presence. You don’t mess with Sir.
How’s Jay-Z liking life as a father of three? (Daughter Blue Ivy is 5.)
Well, he made sure to book his latest tour for well after the birth. “I booked the tour for October so I could have at least four months… to just really bond and see their fingers and shit like that,” he said. “They’ll be with me [on tour] anyway, but I’m just saying, like, [I needed] a space where I’m not doing nothing. I’m just focused on them. I’m not thinking about a show at night or anything like that. That’s why the tour is so far away from the release of the album.”
Jay-Z, founder of Roc Nation, is also a very proud papa when he gets going on the topic of Blue Ivy, who rapped a seriously cool, seriously catchy freestyle for a bonus track on his new album, 4:44.
“I can’t even listen to that song no more. I only listen to her freestyle, and then I’m like, ‘I can’t listen to this,'” he joked to the Rap Radar hosts.
Blue Ivy was just hanging with her dad in the recording studio, and when he wasn’t looking, she decided to make her first solo venture into rap.

“She got the headphones and she climbed on the little stool, and then she just started rapping… I was like, ‘Oh, shit,'” Jay-Z said. “I have [her full freestyle] on my phone. Five minutes! Five minutes of her doing that.”
We love that Jay-Z also keeps five-minute-long recordings of his kids on his phone, storage be damned.
There’s one lyric from Blue Ivy’s freestyle that snagged everybody’s attention (and wouldn’t get out of our heads all summer).
“She kept doing that ‘boom shakalaka, boom shakalaka’ [part]. I was like, ‘Oh, she understands the concept of a hook.’ She’s 5, and she understands the concept of a hook,” said Jay-Z. “I was like, ‘What the fuck is going on in here?’ One of the great memories.”
Clearly, fatherhood agrees mightily with Jay-Z — now we just wish he’d do a photo shoot with all three kids whilst wearing a gauzy veil and some Kentucky Derby flowers.
