Julia Roberts Tries to Carry Her Tweens to Bed

In the December issue of InStyle, cover star Julia Roberts acknowledged that being a mother comes with a unique kind of heartbreak. Roberts, a mother of three — 10-year-old Henry and 12-year-old twins Hazel and Finn — opened up about the bittersweet experience of watching kids grow up.

“All the clichés are true,” she said to InStyle. “I’m so proud of them but also… I tried to carry somebody up to bed the other night, and it was just,?‘All right, you’re gonna have to get on your feet and sleepwalk because I just can’t get up the stairs.’” Pretty impressive that she even tried, though — carrying a kid who’s older than, I dunno, 6 up a flight of stairs? Sounds like some badass firefighter shit to us.

This year, Roberts and husband Danny Moder celebrated their 15-year anniversary and will soon embark on another parental challenge: rearing two teenagers, since Hazel and Finn turn 13 this month. The Oscar-winning actor herself turned 50 in October. And in addition to revealing her love of birthdays — an anomaly for women in Hollywood, apparently — Roberts got real with InStyle about the one topic all reporters seemed stuck on: her life as a woman who has lived more than half a century. (*Gasp!*)

“Really, people?” she said about everyone’s obsession with her age. “Are we still in that space? Did anyone go over this with George Clooney or Brad [Pitt] before their 50th birthdays?”

Roberts is currently promoting her new film, Wonder, based on the 2012 YA novel by R.J. Palacio. The story is about a protective mother of a small boy (played by Jacob Tremblay) who’s struggling socially because of an extreme facial deformity. In a nutshell, Roberts’ character Isabel has to learn to let a lot go, to embrace her family’s unique reality and to stop caring what other people think.
