Selena Gomez’s Mom Told Her Not to Do That Woody Allen Film

Selena Gomez‘s mom, Mandy Teefey, has had it up to here with Gomez ignoring her advice. Us Weekly reports that on Jan. 15, an Instagram user begged Teefey to make Gomez write an apology to her fans after Gomez chose to work with Woody Allen on his new rom-com, A Rainy Day in New York. Allen’s daughter Dylan Farrow has repeatedly accused him of molesting her when she was a child. (Allen continues to deny all Farrow’s allegations.)

Plenty of actors have indeed apologized for working with Allen and/or have donated their entire salaries to charity, and it would behoove Gomez to act accordingly. But for Teefey to “make” her daughter write an apology? Mama — co-executive producer of Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why with Gomez — don’t play that way. Her response didn’t pull punches.

“Sorry, No one can make Selena do anything she doesn’t want to. I had a long talk with her about not working with him and it didn’t click,” Teefey responded. “Her team are amazing people. There is no fall person here. No one controls her. She makes all her own decisions. No matter how hard you try to advise. It falls on deaf ears.”

Gomez’s response to fans who criticize her choice to work with Allen has so far been, well… weak. Gomez talked to Billboard last November about the situation. “To be honest, I’m not sure how to answer — not because I’m trying to back away from it… [The Harvey Weinstein allegations] actually happened right after I had started [on the movie]. They popped up in the midst of it. And that’s something, yes, I had to face and discuss. I stepped back and thought, ‘Wow, the universe works in interesting ways.’”

Interesting ways? Well, yes, it does, Selena — and you might just want to take stock of how your fellow Rainy Day cast members are dealing with the situation. Griffin Newman tweeted last October that he regretted his choice and would opt out of working with Allen again, while also pledging to donate his entire salary to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network. Costar Timothée Chalamet also posted to Instagram that he will be donating his entire salary to Time’s Up, RAINN and the LGBT Community Center in New York City. And costar Rebecca Hall also donated her earnings from the movie to the Time’s Up movement (which was created in the nasty aftermath of recent Hollywood sexual assault allegations).

Selena’s mama also ain’t so happy — reportedly — that her daughter is back together with the Biebs, which is pretty understandable because Gomez and Bieber have notoriously shredded each other’s hearts during their long-term on-again, off-again romance, and hey, there are only so many times a mother can be patient with that, right? According to an Us Weekly source, Gomez chose not to bring Bieber to Thanksgiving dinner with her family because “she didn’t think her mom in particular would approve. She still has trust issues.”

Trust issues and giving out unheeded advice: perhaps what moms do best.
