What an arrival! The Late Night with Seth Meyers host and his wife, Alexi Ashe, greeted their second child on April 8 — on the floor of the lobby of their apartment building in New York City.
Meyers regaled his Monday audience with the tale of his new son’s arrival. The newborn — Axel Strahl — just couldn’t wait for the trip to the hospital. “I called 911, and over the course of a minute conversation, I said, ‘We’re about to have a baby — we’re having a baby — we had a baby,’” Meyers quipped. He thanked the New York Police Department and his neighbors, both of whom were on the scene almost immediately after baby Axel made his appearance. The police helped cut the baby’s cord, while neighbors provided warmed towels from their dryers to keep the baby toasty (that’s the NYC we love!). Check out the whole story.
Meyers said he was surprised when his mother-in-law urged him, “We have to go to the hospital now!” And while heading out to meet their Uber (ha! celebs — they’re just like us, even during birth), Ashe informed Meyers there was no way they were going to get to the hospital.

“We’re in the lobby, and we’re walking down the steps, and my wife just says, ‘I can’t get in the car. I’m going to have the baby right now. The baby is coming,'” Meyers explained. “I’m just trying to calm her down. Again, I know ’cause I’ve been through exactly one birth.”
Ashe then calmly stated, “The baby is out.” Rock star.
Meyers explained his son’s unique middle name — a nod to Ashe’s grandparents, who met in Austria the day after being liberated from a concentration camp at the end of WWII.
Meyers became tearful as he spoke about his wife giving birth, but joked, “I’m getting choked up thinking about how brave I was.” He also shared a photo of the scene, showing Ashe on the ground snuggling baby Axel to her chest while EMTs kept an oxygen mask on her. Meyers is beaming in the shot — typical proud papa.

Axel Strahl joins big brother Ashe Olson, who was born in March 2016. We’re thrilled for the family — but hope they don’t have any more major surprises for a while.
