It’s a boy for Kate and William!
The news of the arrival of a healthy baby prince was released this morning in deliciously old-school British fashion — by a “self-proclaimed Royalist Town Crier.” Nope, we could not make that up. The town crier mounted the steps to the famous Lindo Wing of St. Mary’s Hospital in London, where throngs of media and well-wishers had gathered in anticipation.

There, the town crier grandly announced the birth of a wee baby prince this morning, Monday, April 23. The town crier also tossed in a “God save the Queen” for added royal flourish and it was all very exciting; we’re not gonna lie. We’ll take a hear-ye-hear-ye proclamation of royal birth any day over a baby sprinkle or glitter cake gender reveal, thank you very much.
The new baby of Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge, commonly known as Kate Middleton, joins brother George, 4, and sister Charlotte, 3. The infant is fifth in line to the throne, following his grandfather, Prince Charles, father William, brother George and sister Charlotte.
One Twitter user used this historical moment as a teachable opportunity to show the line of succession in comic fashion:

It’s true: Prince Harry has been bumped to sixth in the line of succession. But we’re guessing he’s not one bit troubled by the news considering he’s now virtually guaranteed a chill life as the fun ginger uncle and will soon be marrying his lovely fiancée, American actor Meghan Markle.

This is the first time in British history a boy will not precede his older sister in the line of succession. According to Cosmopolitan, “the Succession to the Crown Act of 2013 ensures that Charlotte wouldn’t have to give up her place in the line of succession. Basically, before 2011, any girl who was in line to the throne would lose her place if a male sibling came after her. That would mean that before this rule, Charlotte would have had to give up her place in the line of succession to her new baby brother. Now, any royal born after October 28, 2011 (so, all of Will and Kate’s children) will keep their place in line regardless of gender or sex.”
And Prince George would really prefer to be a police officer, so we’ll see how it all plays out. We’re just excited there will be a third mini royal to unintentionally steal the show — and hearts.
To announce the birth, Kensington Palace tweeted a statement. (Yes! Palaces tweet now! What a world!)
“Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 1101hrs. The baby weighs 8lbs 7oz. The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth. Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well. The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news.”
Royal protocol also calls for an additional official announcement to be posted on a proper easel on the grounds of Buckingham palace — so that any meandering serfs and shuffling tourists in the vicinity might also share in the good news.

It’s likely the happy parents will get a visit from close family: perhaps Kate’s parents, Mike and Carole Middleton; and Prince Charles and wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. We wouldn’t be surprised by a Harry or a Pippa (Kate’s sister) sighting, either.
No name has been announced, but the U.K. is in a betting frenzy over the new prince’s likely moniker, with Albert and Arthur as top contenders. British oddsmakers are calling Albert at 5 – 1 odds and Arthur at 9 – 1. (We’re guessing Stormi, True, Chicago, Reign, Gunner, any forms of Jaden or Caden and animal names such as Bear or Otter have been royally ruled out.)
George would have been a fitting choice, as today is St. George’s Day. Oopsie! April 23 is also widely considered to be William Shakespeare’s birthday. Might we expect a William Jr., perhaps?
