Lucy Liu Gave Super-Rare Details About How Her Son Rockwell Is Her ‘Greatest Teacher’

Lucy Liu is getting real, and getting really vulnerable, as she talks about her son Rockwell, in a super-rare interview.

In a recent appearance with Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager during an appearance on the Today show via UsMagazine, Liu talked about how her son, Rockwell, has truly changed her life, and made her learn so much as a grown-up.

“My son is really my teacher. He is my greatest teacher and I am a student,” she said. “Everything that you have calcified in your life as a grown-up or a person going through the experience of life kind of breaks open and starts cracking once you have a child because you learn these things don’t work.”

She also talked about how she and Rockwell work to better themselves, and be forgiving to one another.

“When you have a child or a family, you have to change the dimension of how you think and you feel and how you react. Because there can be a lot of triggering moments,” she added. “Then you discover you can repair those moments even if you didn’t use your words the best in that moment. You can say, ‘I can do better,’ and that’s a huge thing because it’s granting you forgiveness as a human being and as a parent.”

For those who don’t know, Liu is a proud single parent to her son Rockwell, whom she welcomed in 2015 via gestational surrogate. (For those that don’t know, a gestational surrogate is when an embryo created by IVF is then implanted into a surrogate, per Cleveland Clinic!)

In a previous interview with The Cut, the Charlie’s Angels alum revealed that she basically had no plan ahead of having her son Rockwell.

“I didn’t have a plan,” she said about the surrogacy. “I just thought, I didn’t want to talk about the next project. I felt like I was reading the same script. I got tired of it. I didn’t want the same dialogue. I’d heard myself say the same things many, many times and just thought, ‘Well this can’t be next.’ It wasn’t enough. I just pulled the trigger. I can think myself out of something easily; if I think too much, I won’t do it.”
