Parenting is full of ups and downs. And while the holiday season can be a magical, joyous time (definitely an up), it also takes place during flu season. If you’ve ever taken care of a sick, miserable baby, then you know how down it can make you feel. It’s just breaks our hearts seeing our kids not feeling their best! Rumer Willis is going through this right now with her 20-month-old daughter Louetta “Lou” Isley, who she shares with ex Derek Richard Thomas, and she opened up about how hard it is in a vulnerable new post.
“Watching your kid go through sickness is one of the hardest things I have ever had to witness and hold space for as a mother,” the Sorority Row actress wrote on her Instagram story, per Hello! Magazine. She shared a selfie of herself with a furrowed brow lying on a bed with her shirt pulled up as Lou breastfeeds.
Sick babies are so sad, but at least Willis is able to offer her daughter all the snuggles and love while she doesn’t feel good!
Last October, Willis got vulnerable about how sickness made her question her parenting abilities. “I have been reflecting this week on the strength of Mamas, of this incredible gift of resilience and love,” she wrote on Instagram. “The softness that can come from vulnerability and asking for help. The flu took both my Lou and me simultaneously, and it brought not just symptoms but moments of doubt. Could I manage taking care of her and myself in this weakened state?” We’ve all felt that way at one point or another, haven’t we?
“But in that storm of uncertainty, we discovered an uncharted strength within ourselves,” she continued. “The resilience I summoned in the face of a common challenge mothers everywhere deal with truly showed me so much about myself and my capacity. As a parent, you sometimes question your abilities, but that week, as the flu raged on, it became clear that I was more capable than I ever thought. That I could be her safe place and I could hold the container for both of us.”
She may have more experience taking care of her sick baby and handling motherhood, but that doesn’t make it any easier seeing your child sick. Feel better soon, Lou!
