Ryan Reynolds Reveals One Thing That Makes Him ‘Kind of Die Inside’ as a Parent

The hardest part of fatherhood for Ryan Reynolds isn’t the endless diaper changes or carpooling or navigating complicated situations with his kids. He takes those in stride! For the dad of four, the worst part is something much more difficult to handle — and it’s something many working parents can relate to. The Deadpool & Wolverine star opened up about what makes him “kind of die inside” as a parent, and it’ll will make you emotional.

Reynolds and Andrew Garfield interviewed each other for Variety’s Actors on Actors series, where The Amazing Spider-Man actor asked the Deadpool star if he would reprise his role for a fourth movie. “My feeling is that character works very well in two ways. One is scarcity and surprise,” Reynolds said in the video interview, per PEOPLE. “It had been six years since the last [Deadpool film] and part of the reason is that it swallows my whole life. You can’t take your hand off the stick all the way through development, through postproduction into marketing and promo, and then you kind of [stop.]”

“I don’t ever want to be an absentee [dad], and I don’t ever want to miss stuff,” Reynolds said about his daughters James, 9, Inez, 7, and Betty, 4, and son Olin, 1, who he shares with wife Blake Lively. “I, like, kind of die inside when I see their face and they have a competition or they have a sports thing or something and I missed it,” he added. Aww! Even though we aren’t all famous actors, many of us have jobs that takes us away from our kids some of the time — or make us miss things important to them! — and it’s a heart-wrenching feeling every single time. The fact that Reynolds feels this too, even though he’s doing it to make a huge Hollywood film, shows how much he cares as a dad.

In fact, spending more time with his kids is reportedly exactly what Reynolds wants to do in 2025. Insiders told Life and Style Magazinethis month that the “workaholics” Reynolds and his It Ends With Us star wife want to focus on their family this year.

“With 2024 almost over, Ryan is signaling to his Hollywood pals that he and Blake are jumping off the treadmill, retreating to their country home for the holidays and focusing on family for the foreseeable future,” a source told the outlet. “It was a crazy year for both of them and they need time with their kids and time away from New York City and Los Angeles.”

“They’re committed to it precisely because they’re committed to their family and keeping it together,” the insider added. “…They both had to spring like crazy to get their 2024 movies finished and in shape for release. But now they’ve cleared their schedules and are serious about family coming first.”
