2 Broke Girls alum Kat Dennings has become quite beloved for her confident spirit, and take-no-BS attitude both on and off screen. She’s become quite an inspiration for many, and now, she’s telling people after her beginnings as a child star. And wow, casting directors said some awful things to her. However, she also revealed that her parents instilled a rather confident philosophy into her at a young age.
In a recent interview with People, Dennings talked about how to brush off those critics at as young as 12 years old.
“The time that I was auditioning and starting to act, it was a very different environment than it is now,” she recalled to the outlet, talking about the negative feedback she received. “There was not a lot of inclusivity at all. It was very harsh. There was a lot of extremely negative feedback and people would not hold back. It was pretty crazy thinking about it. I’m like, ‘How can anyone say that about a little kid? This is insane.'”
If you’re wondering what they said to her, she said, “…My manager would call me and I’d be like, ‘How’d it go?’ And they’d be like, ‘Well, they thought you weren’t pretty enough and you’re fat.'”
Holy moly, what an awful thing to say to anyone, especially a child! While this could’ve broken a lot of people, Dennings’ parents instilled a confident mindset into her.
She revealed that the critiques only spurred her on, and encouraged her. “That was my attitude. For some reason, it didn’t break my spirit. I was like, ‘I’ll show them.’ I guess props to my parents, because they were like, ‘They’re idiots. Don’t listen to them.’ And I was like, ‘They’re idiots, I’m not.'”
Honestly, we love that her parents ensured that she remained confident and happy throughout the touch world of child acting.
For those who don’t know, her parents are Ellen Judith Litwack, who is a poet and speech therapist, and Gerald J. Litwack, who was a molecular pharmacologist, and college professor and chairman. Dennings has always been close with her family, and has spoken highly of her parents over the years. Tragically, her father Gerald passed away at the age of 94 in Sept 2023.
