That’s right, y’all! We have a toddler in a Canadian tuxedo on our hands! Jeannie Mai‘s daughter Monaco officially celebrated her third birthday, and the little style icon rocked the cutest denim-on-denim ‘fit.
And we know what some of you might be thinking. (“Double denim?! Double nope!”) But we’ve been proponents of the hotly-debated fashion choice since Eva Chen swore to us that denim is “truly a neutral.”
“I think we should embrace the Canadian tuxedo and I applaud Canada for introducing this concept to us,” the multi-hyphenate tells SheKnows. “If you wear a denim shirt — like an oversized menswear-style denim oxford shirt — with a really cool pair of, like, straight denim jeans …,” she trails off pointedly.
And now, Monaco — who Mai shares with ex-husband Jeezy — is proving Chen’s point. We really should applaud Canada for paving the way for this tot’s birthday look. “Coco” wore a light-wash denim set with a button-up shirt (much like Chen described) and slightly baggy bottoms (ditto).
Best of all? Both pieces were covered in embroidered flowers. It was the cutest little touch that made the outfit so fresh and fun for the toddler’s belated birthday celebration.
“The beginning of January was not at all what I had imagined,” Mai captioned an Instagram post, talking about how she and her daughter did not expect to spend the past few weeks preparing to evacuate and helping those impacted by the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles.
“Monaco’s third birthday quietly came and went, and though our focus was on supporting others, I couldn’t let this major milestone pass by without celebrating my little girl,” the TV personality continued. “So, this weekend—yup, three weeks later—we finally paused to give my lil Monaco the birthday celebration she truly deserved.”
That celebration included a very special appearance from none other than Rubble from Paw Patrol. “Watching her face light up when [Rubble] showed up was priceless—he’s her fave 🥹”
And so is it really any wonder that Coco paired her Canadian Tuxedo with yellow bows (Rubble’s signature color!) and Rubble-themed face paint?! She even had a Rubble birthday cake with an excavator on top. (ICYMI: Rubble is the construction pup!)
“We also handed out red envelopes in honor of the Lunar New Year, giving everyone a meaningful way to embrace new beginnings,” Mai continued. “It felt so symbolic that the day after Monaco’s party, LA received its first rain of the year—reminding us of hope and renewal after such challenging times. Even in the midst of life’s challenges, it’s never too late to celebrate the moments that matter most🎂☔️🐾✨”
