King Charles ‘Delighted’ About the Newest Royal Baby — & Her Name Is a Nod to the Greek Goddess of War

Hear ye, hear ye! There’s a new royal baby, ladies and gents, and King Charles III is “delighted” by the news. Princess Beatrice — daughter of the King’s brother Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson — just welcomed her second baby girl with husband Edoardo “Edo” Mapelli Mozzi, and we’re obsessed with her powerful name.

In a statement posted to X (formerly Twitter), the royal family announced the “safe arrival” of “Athena Elizabeth Rose Mapelli Mozzi.” Little Athena clearly has a mind of her own, possibly showing up several weeks early, per People. And is that really any wonder when she’s named after two trailblazing women? “Athena” is the Greek goddess of wisdom and war, and “Elizabeth” honors the newborn’s great-grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Athena shares the middle name with her 3-year-old big sister Sienna and joins her 8-year-old half-brother, Christopher Woolf “Wolfie” who Edo shares with ex Dara Huang.

“The King and Queen, and other members of The Royal Family have all been informed and are delighted with the news,” Buckingham Palace said. “Princess Beatrice and Mr Mapelli Mozzi would like to thank all the staff at the hospital for their wonderful care.”

“Her Royal Highness and her daughter are healthy and doing well, and the family are enjoying spending time together with Athena’s older siblings, Wolfie and Sienna,” the announcement continued.

This announcement seemed to go off without a hitch after Buckingham Palace flubbed Princess Beatrice’s pregnancy announcement in October. The royal “oopsie” involved calling Beatrice “Her Royal Highess” — proving that even royals make spelling mistakes. The original also said that Baby No. 2 would arrive in early spring, while the corrected statement said early in the new year. So it’s hard to know if Athena actually arrived before her due date, or if that’s just lingering confusion from the botched pregnancy announcement.

Edo shared his own celebratory birth announcement today. “[Athena] is tiny and absolutely perfect,” the dad of three wrote on Instagram. “We are all (including Wolfie and Sienna) already completely besotted with her.”

“Our hearts are overflowing with love for you, baby Athena. 💕,” he continued.

Athena is 11th in the line of succession to the British throne, but she likely won’t be named a princess. Instead, she will defer to her father’s Italian nobility and become a contessa. We can’t wait to see all the great things that are in store for little Contessa Athena Elizabeth Rose Mapelli Mozzi.

Congratulations to the sweet family of five!
