Lily Collins & Charlie McDowell Respond to Trolls After Welcoming Daughter via Surrogacy

Lily Collins and her husband Charlie McDowell shocked the world by announcing they welcomed a daughter via surrogacy. And of course, because it’s the internet, trolls have something to say about them welcoming a baby via surrogacy. However, they clapped back in the best way!

In case you missed it, on Jan 31, theEmily in Parisstar shared an update no one expected: she and her husband McDowell welcomed a beautiful baby girl into the world via surrogacy. She shared the photo to Instagram with the caption reading, “Welcome to the center of our world Tove Jane McDowell. Words will never express our endless gratitude for our incredible surrogate and everyone who helped us along the way. We love you to the moon and back again…”

While you think the comments under the announcement would all be joyous, and granted most of them are, trolls just had to come in and try to rain on their parade. In fact, people commented some vile things under the sweet announcement, attacking them got getting a surrogate, saying “rich people using women as incubators once again lmao,” and “Well, they bought a baby, and that’s a fact.” (No, it’s not!)

There are so many things wrong with those statements, but we’ll let McDowell, who brilliantly commented what he thinks about those trolls, do the talking.

“Thank you for all the kind messages and love. We are overjoyed and very grateful,” he said. “In regards to the unkind messages about surrogacy and our path to having a baby— it’s ok to not be an expert on surrogacy. It’s ok to not know why someone might need a surrogate to have a child. It’s ok to not know the motivations of a surrogate regardless of what you assume. And it’s ok to spend less time spewing hateful words into the world, especially in regards to a beautiful baby girl who has brought a lot of love into people’s lives. That’s all for now because she just pooped and I need to change her diaper.”

First off, we just have to say we love her name Tove Jane, it’s the perfect mix of combining classic and unique. (Plus, we love that she has the same middle name as Collins!) Secondly, go McDowell and Collins! You don’t know why someone chose to welcome a baby via surrogacy, nor is it anyone’s place to speculate why. What we do know is that their baby is happy, and will be so loved.

Plus, surrogacy is more common than you think. Surrogacy is most common in the United States, Canada, and Australia. Globally, thousands of people welcome babies through surrogacy births happen each year, per World Center of Baby, and it’s expected to rise throughout the next decade.

For those who don’t know, the couple met on the set of Gilded Rage back in 2019. That same year, they got together, and adopted a dog named “baby Redford.” In 2020, they got engaged, and on Sept. 4, 2021, they got married in a fairytale-like wedding in Dunton, Colorado (where Collins made headlines for her custom, hooded Ralph Lauren lace gown).

Then, as you know, they welcomed a daughter named Tove Jane in Jan 2025. McDowell actually even hinted at their parenting plans back in Oct 2024, saying to EOnline, “We would like to. We would like to move into that next stage, so we’ll see when it happens!”
