Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s daughter Princess Lilibet Diana caused quite a stir with her name. While the unique moniker is quite controversial, it’s actually making waves with US baby names.
In details obtained by The Bump via Hello, it seems the name “Lilibet” has gotten more and more popular since the Princess’ birth in 2021. The name is currently in the top 3800 of names in US births, with many pointing the fingers at the Princess for the name jump.
It’s a Hebrew name that means “God is my oath,” and was a common nickname for the name Elizabeth, like with Queen Elizabeth II. Before it hit the top 9,000 names in the US, it was off the list for well over 20 years.
It was on their list for the first time in 1988, and then not again until 1995, 1996, and 1999. It didn’t come back until 2021, when it hit number 8,744, then it grew in 2022 when it hit number 5,102, and then in 2023, it hit number 3,734; the highest it’s ever been. It’s unclear where it will be in 2024, or even 2025, but if the pattern continues, the name Lilibet will just keep getting even more popular, despite Harry and Meghan being very private about their royal daughter.
For those who don’t know, Harry and Meghan started dating in 2016, and by April 2018, they were married in a beautiful royal ceremony.
They share two children together named Prince Archie, born in May 2019, and Lilibet Diana, born in June 2021.
