There are a lot of things that put Princess Charlotte in a league of her own. The 9-year-old royal is the Queen of Sass, the Queen of Stylish Sustainability, and she has some unbelievable side eye that rivals her late grandma Princess Diana. And now, it turns out that the young Princess of Wales — who Prince William and Kate Middleton share along with sons Prince George, 11 and Prince Louis, 6 —will inherit an ultra-rare title down the line.
When Prince William presumably becomes King, it’s believed that Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana of Wales will be given the title of “Princess Royal.” The title, which is typically given to the eldest daughter of the monarch, has only been held by eight other members of the royal family. Starting with Princess Mary, the eldest daughter of King Charles I and Queen Henrietta Maria, the title was most recently given to Princess Anne, the daughter of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip.
In between, there was King James II’s daughter Princess Louisa Maria, King George II’s daughter Princess Anne, King George III’s daughter Princess Charlotte, Queen Victoria’s daughter Princess Victoria, King Edward VII’s daughter Princess Louise, and King George V’s daughter Princess Mary.
So, assuming Princess Charlotte continues to be a senior member of the royal family (and doesn’t step down like her uncle, Prince Harry), the precedent is that Princess Charlotte would become the ninth Princess Royal and the second in the line of succession once King Willy sits on the throne. The only delay would be if her 74-year-old great aunt Princess Anne is still alive at that time, given that there can only be one Princess Royal at a time.
It’s pretty special that Princess Charlotte will, presumably, eventually inherit such a rare and historic title. And this reminder comes at such a perfect time, given that the young royal just lost a very exclusive one.

But of the two, we’d say Princess Charlotte’s presumptive title is definitely more prestigious. Even if it doesn’t get as many Google searches.
