Christina Ricci Reveals the Embarrassing (& Adorable!) Tidbit Her Son Told His Preschool Teachers

If you’re already cringing in anticipation, we guarantee you’re not alone. Nearly every parent has a story of an embarrassing thing their child told their teacher. And while we know “kids say the darndest things,” we also know we’d rather they didn’t tell the world about how bad our cooking is or about catching us in the act.

And what if they say something that has educators truly wondering if everything is alright at home?!

Christina Ricci knows firsthand just how cringe-worthy it all is, thanks to her 10-year-old son Freddie who she shares with ex James Heerdegen. During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the Yellowjackets star reminisced on Freddie’s preschool years.

It was then that she showed him Casper — the beloved 1995 film where a young Ricci befriends a famously friendly ghost. Despite it being for kids, Ricci said she showed the movie to Freddie when he was “way too young.”

“Which was a mistake,” she told host Jimmy Fallon, per Us Weekly.

Because young Freddie didn’t quite understand the concept of her being in a movie.

“I was driving him to preschool one day and he was like, ‘Oh, mom, I told my teachers about your childhood … that you lived in your house with your dad and all those ghosts,’” she said.

Eek! Could you imagine being Freddie’s unsuspecting teacher (maybe a substitute who doesn’t know that his mom is Christina Ricci) and hearing that?! I’d be wondering what in the world goes on after school to make Freddie think his mom and grandpa lived with ghosts. We can just imagine Ricci facepalming and trying to explain the situation to the teachers. The mix-up is so cringe, but it’s also so cute that he wanted to tell everyone about his mom’s “childhood.”

“Developmentally, it was too soon!” the actress continued. “I’ve learned now, we’re going to wait a little bit for [my 3-year-old daughter] Cleo.”

When the time comes, we have no doubt Cleo — who Ricci shares with husband Mark Hampton — will love the spooky movie.

“I’m not a huge fan of Halloween,” Ricci said in an Oct. 2024 interview, “but my youngest daughter, who’s only 2 years and 8 months, she happens to be just like preternaturally obsessed with all things Halloween.”

And any kid “obsessed” with the spooky holiday would probably love to find out their mom lived with ghosts.
