It doesn’t matter if you’re an experienced mom or a professional chef — or, in Chrissy Teigen’s case, both. When it comes to making dinner for your kids, nothing will satisfy them! Well, except for their very strict, limited preferences (which randomly change without a moment’s notice, of course). The Cravings author implored moms to let go of an impossible parenting standard of trying to make food your kids will love, and it’s honestly such a relief.
Teigen made a yummy looking meatloaf dinner for her family on Wednesday night, sharing a photo of the ingredients on her Instagram story. (PEOPLE has screenshots HERE.) She shared process videos of herself cooking the meal with reality TV playing in the background. It looks so relaxing! Finally, the meal is done, and Teigen shares a mouth-watering video of the entire spread. But while we would love to dine at her house any time, Teigen’s 1-year-old son Wren is not feeling the same way.
“Please eat it. Can you please try it?” Teigen asks Wren in a video. The toddler is sitting in a highchair next to his sister Esti, 2. They are both more interested in their mom’s phone than the food right in front of them.
“Can you try it?” she asks again, prompting Wren to finally respond in the cutest little voice, “No!” Teigen sighs. What can you do? As a mom of picky eaters, I’ve been here more times than I can count!
In another video, she shared a message to moms. “To all the moms struggling out there about dinner, it does not matter.”
“You can spend three hours making it, you can spend five minutes making it. It doesn’t matter. They hate it,” Teigen added.
Teigen, who shares Wren, Esti, Miles, 6, and Luna, 8, with husband John Legend, has opened up about her kids’ food preferences in the past. During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Livelast year, she shared that her eldest daughter “is the best eater.” “Luna is amazing, she eats salads, vegetables,” Teigen said.
Her son, Miles, is the complete opposite. “Miles has still not had a vegetable,” she shared. “He is six, almost. He accidentally ate a broccoli floret in a fried rice and was so upset about it.”
So like any mom at the end of her rope (read: all moms), Teigen makes adjustments. She’s been known to make four different dinners for her kids so everyone ends up satisfied. After all, the mantra “fed is best” doesn’t just apply to breastmilk vs. formula — it’s also a helpful reminder that as long as our kids are eating, we are doing just fine.
