Jenna Dewan Shares the ‘Cool’ Way She Bonds With Daughter Everly — & It’s All Thanks To Sixth-Grade Boys!

Jenna Dewan has an unusual group to thank for her latest bonding activity with 11-year-old daughter Everly: sixth-grade boys in her daughter’s class! Usually, an interest in boys drives girls away from their parents, but in this case, they inspired her to do one “cool” activity with her mom.

The Step Up alum revealed her daughter’s classmates encouraged her to watch her mom’s show, The Rookie, which is super popular on TikTok right now. “It’s funny — she’d seen an episode or two of The Rookie in the past, but it was always a little bit scary for her,” Dewan told Variety. “However, recently she said, ‘Mom, I really want to watch The Rookie.’ I think I have some of the boys in her sixth-grade class to thank, because they’re coming to school saying how good it is.”

Aww, how sweet is that? I love that these boys were praising her mom’s show, and it made Everly want to watch it too. Even celebrity parents know how hard it is to look cool in our kids’ eyes, so this sounds like a huge win for Dewan.

In the interview, the professional dancer gushed about how much her daughter enjoys watching the show with her mom. “So she’s in love with the show now. Every night she’s like, ‘Can we watch a new Rookie?’,” Dewan, who shares Everly with ex Channing Tatum, continued. “So we’ve gotten to the point now where my daughter can officially watch some of the things that I do and really like it.”

Recently, Dewan’s fiancé Steve Kazee (with whom she shares 4-year-old son Callum and 8-month-old daughter Rhiannon) guest starred on The Rookie, and Everly got to see that as well. “She watched the episode with Steve and I recently, and she was just like, ‘Oh my gosh, that was so intense! I can’t believe that’s you guys!’” Dewan recalled. “It’s cool to be able to share it with her.” Amazing!

As for her future plans, Everly is more interested in pursuing dance than acting right now. “She definitely is more of the dancer side of us,” Dewan said when asked if Everly takes after her parents’ dancing skills or acting skills. “She is a competitive Irish dancer, so a totally different way than I went, but [she’s] still in the ballrooms of Marriotts all around the world competing. She loves it; she’s super into it,” Dewan added.

In an interview with the Magic Mike star last year, he opened up more about Everly’s interests right now. “We ride our bikes and stuff together. But she’s obsessed with Irish Celtic dancing right now,” he told SheKnows. “So we’re going to competitions and traveling and doing this whole thing. It’s intense. She’s very good at it. She just saw it and was like, I want to do that. That right there. And we were like, ‘What? Irish Celtic dancing of all the dancing? OK, whatever, weirdo.’ Cause she’s so weird, she likes Japanimation, manga, and Irish Celtic dancing. She’s very eclectic.”

And while she may like her mom’s new show, she is so far not interested in her dad’s work. He told us, “She’s watched Smallfoot. She hasn’t seen very much of anything else I’ve done. Nothing else, really I think, one: that she’d be interested in; and two: it’s not really for her. She’d just be like, ‘Nope, this is weird.’”

“I think [Jenna Dewan and I] showed her Step Up like when she was really young, and she was just like, ‘OK.’ Not impressed,” he added.

Maybe if someone she likes in school watches one of his films, she’ll like it!

These celebrity kids are giving their parents a humbling reality check by having zero interest in their movies.
