Is UGG’s New Mary Jane the Next ‘It’ Shoe? We Asked Teen Girls to Share Their Honest Reviews

Back in my day (I’m 22… am I allowed to say ‘back in my day’?), UGG boots were utilitarian. We wore them to middle school during peak February freezes, then ditched them for trendier sneakers at the first sign of March

So when my editor sent me the link to UGG’s new product and asked me to have teen girls weigh in, I was confident I could get the job done. After all, teens love UGGs. So much so that I wrote a piece advising parents on how to choose the right style of UGG for their teen. Plus, an UGG’s an UGG, right? How much change could possibly be made to those furry brown boots? It turns out that the answer is a lot. And when it comes to UGG’s new Bea Mary Jane shoes, teen girls have thoughts

The UGG Bea Mary Jane shoe is basically UGG’s version of a classic Mary Jane — only with a cozy sheepskin lining. According to UGG’s site, these shoes are already a “Best Seller” and “Going fast!” Not only that, “5,762 people have viewed this in the past day.” Whoa.

These are UGG’s new Bea Mary Jane shoes. I would say boot, but Mary Jane’s are technically sandals, and so I’m going with the safe option: “shoes.”

With teen girls seemingly constituting one of UGG’s largest consumer groups, I wondered how many of those 5,762 are actually teen girls? While the answer to that is probably proprietary UGG information, I set out to ask teen girls: “Would you wear these?”

Gwendolyn, 16, a member of the SheKnows Teen council, is “a big fan of UGGs,” but when it comes to the new Bea Mary Janes, she paused. “They’re not practical with cold, but they are fun,” she said.

LouLou, also 16, saw a picture of the shoes and simply responded, “Why is there a hole?”

Still, for every skeptic, there’s a fan. Lillia, 17, told us that even though she’s not “a microtrend person,” she is “a Mary Jane girl” and thinks the UGG Mary Janes look “so comfy and cute.” She’d wear them with tall socks.

Qishan, 18, said she’d style them “with white scrunchie socks, a mini skirt, and an oversized jacket.”

And finally, Miranda, 18, praised UGG for their decision to be daring. “It’s really cool that UGG is trying to adapt to the current style trends and create products out of their comfort zone.”

So while this new UGG style is slightly divisive, one thing I learned when I interviewed teens on what gifts they wanted most this past holiday season is that it’s hard to go wrong with UGGs. Teens love UGGs, remember? I graduated from college with a Bachelor of Arts — but for my writing career so far, my Bachelor of UGGs has proven most useful.
