Can we go ahead and give Ben Affleck the award for Hollywood’s Grumpiest A-lister? Nearly every time we see him, he has the most hilarious stank face, and at this point, we know it’s not just a bad photo.
And so we were stunned to see Affleck looking so uncharacteristically gleeful with a special someone. The DunKing has been spending a whole lot of time with the DunPrince (if you will), his 12-year-old son Samuel. Most recently, the two showed up to watch the Los Angeles Lakers take on the Minnesota Timberwolves, and were showing off their Lakers pride. While Sam — who Affleck shares with ex-wife Jennifer Garner along with kids Violet, 19, Seraphina, 16 — opted for a Lakers hoodie, Affleck was more subtle with his light purple button down.
The Oscar winner had the biggest smile on his face while he sat courtside with his son, and that’s the other thing that’s throwing us off — he doesn’t tend to look happy, not even when he’s with his kids. And for good reason. Last year, the Gone Girl star opened up to Kevin Hart about his memeable “eff off” expression.
“I don’t like a lot of attention. That’s why people see me and they’re like, ‘Why’s this dude always mad?’ Because somebody has their camera and sticks it in my face,” he said on an episode of Hart to Heart last year.
“Also because I’m with my kids and they’re taking my picture,” he continued. “Actually, what I’d like to do is much more definitive than just look at you like this. … You can take my picture at a club or a premiere … I don’t give a f*ck. Knock yourself out.”
” … But with my children that’s a different thing.”
And yet, when he sits at an NBA game with his basketball-loving son, there is always a smile on his face (interspersed with a bit of “resting hard face,” of course). You can see the most recent major grin HERE.
And this is not just a one off. Affleck wore a matching smile earlier this month (see below) when he took Sam to another game. Who is that cheery guy?!
Glee isn’t the only uncharacteristic emotion we’ve seen from the [understandably] grumpy father lately. Last month, Affleck look visibly relieved to reunite with his daughter Violet after evacuating his Los Angeles home due to the devastating wildfires. The photos — which captured a smile and a kiss to the temple — were so touching.
OK, so we take it back. Maybe Affleck isn’t Hollywood’s Grumpiest A-lister. He’s merely a man of multitudes who tends to hate the paparazzi (especially if his kids are nearby!) … but loves his family.
