Ilona Maher was not too shy to talk about losing her virginity when it happened, and she’s certainly not too shy to talk about it now. The Olympic rugby player “vividly” remembers calling her mom to share the news earlier in her 20s.
While some kids desperately avoid the “birds and the bees” talk with their parents — much less talking about actually birds and bees-ing — Maher told her mom the Big News right after telling her sister Olivia. Maher’s mom must have [amazingly!] fostered an incredibly sex-positive household. Especially considering Olivia insisted it was her sister’s “sexual debut.”
“You didn’t lose anything,” Olivia said on an episode of the Wave original podcast they host with their sister Adrianna, House of Maher.
“We had family over, I was like, ‘Mom, I gotta talk to you,’” Ilona recounted, per Us Weekly. “She’s like, ‘Alright, I’ll go upstairs.’ She goes upstairs to the bathroom and I’m like, ‘Mom, I lost my virginity.’ And she was like, ‘OK. Wow.’”
Ilona then told her mom she was going to need to schedule an appointment with a gynecologist “right now” because she’ll “be pretty busy from now on.”
“[My mom] accepted the news and was like, ‘Oh, OK. You know be safe … and I’ll get that scheduled for you,’” she said. “I guess she goes back down to sit at the table with the family friends that are there. She’s silent … like catatonic.”
And while Ilona, Olivia, and Adrianna might have been giddy after the “debut,” Ilona joked that her mom “didn’t sleep a wink that night.”
“She’s always been that way,” the Olympic bronze medalist said. “We can talk to her about pretty much anything to the point where I’m like, ‘I probably shouldn’t have shared that.'”
But no, the sex-positive Maher girls are glad their sister made that call. “She stepped up and helped and she got you the [gynecologist] appointments,” Olivia noted. Adrianna agreed, adding that her mom was “making sure her daughter is healthy.”
And now we are dying to know the details from their mom’s point of view? Does she “vividly” remember the call too? What was going through her mind when she was “catatonic?” And how in the world did she manage to create such a sex-positive home where her girls knew they could share this information with her and that she would not only be OK with it, but help them stay safe too? It sounds like she deserves an Olympic medal in parenting!
