Lady Gagarecently shared a first look at her new beauty line, Haus Laboratories, with Allure. And while celebrity-helmed beauty lines are in vogue these days, Gaga also talked about how the inspiration for the line goes all the way back to her childhood.
“I’ve always been really close to my mom,” Gaga told Allure, “When I was a little girl, I was just fascinated with her morning beauty ritual.” She went on to describe how seeing her mother put on make-up before work in the morning helped her see her mother as “so, so beautiful, and so strong.”
In an Instagram post announcing the launch of the brand, Gaga echoed her interview with Allure. Through seeing her mother put on her “bravest face” to be a strong working woman, Gaga saw makeup as a way for her to experiment and find self-expression and identity through beauty as well.
While it can be easy to dismiss makeup as a way to pressure women to adhere to certain beauty standards, Gaga’s own experience is a reminder that it can also be a powerful tool for self-expression.”
“I’m so grateful that makeup inspired a bravery in me I didn’t know I had,” she wrote in her post.

Her emotional connection to makeup continues to this day. She described to Allure how she hopes her new line can be transformative for people in the same way. She also hopes to share the same experiences she had with her mother with her own child one day.
“I really hope that when I have maybe a little girl one day, or a little boy, and they see mommy put her makeup on, that they have the same experience that I did. That’s the greatest gift of all, when you can connect with your parents,” she said.
Haus Laboratories will launch on Monday, July 15 at 3 a.m. ET on hauslabs.com as well as on Amazon in conjunction with Prime Day.
