Sarah Jessica Parker Shares the Parenting Secret She Got From Dolly Parton

It’s one thing to be famous, but it’s another thing entirely to be the child of someone famous. Take Sex and the City’s Sarah Jessica Parker, for example, known to most as sex columnist Carrie Bradshaw. In real life, SJP has three kids (which would possibly shock her character, who doesn’t have any children with husband “Mr. Big” — at least as far as we know) who grew up in the spotlight. Her 16-year-old son, James, was born around the time the last Sex and the City season premiered; her 10-year-old twins, Marion and Tabitha, were born via surrogate after the first SATC movie hit the big screen. And in an interview this week with Australian model Rebecca Judd’s KIIS FM radio show, Parker talks about how she keeps her children humble despite their privileged upbringing

“Parents who aren’t well-known can have children who aren’t grounded because of the example set in their home,” she told Judd, highlighting the importance of teaching kids values no matter who they are (or where they live). And you’ll never guess whose parenting words of wisdom Parker lives by, apparently: (child-free) country singer Dolly Parton. Who knew?

Parton, who came from humble beginnings, vowed to only “give her family what they need rather than what they want.” Taking this wise advice, Parker adds her own ideology to these words to live by. “I will do my best to make sure you always have what you need, but I want you pining towards something,” she said on KIIS FM. “I want you to work for something, to dream of it, to will it to happen.” Like most parents (famous or not), it’s evident that Parker believes in not spoiling children and in encouraging them to be ambitious and goal-oriented.

Even though Carrie and Big never had a child of their own, we know they’d make great parents if they, too, followed Dolly’s advice. “I mean, Carrie was a very good and loyal friend, and I imagine she’d be as devoted to a child as she would be to her friendships and I think she’d be thrilled to introduce any child to New York City and all of its promise,” Parker told InStyle last month.

We couldn’t help but wonder…what it would be like for SATC to come out with a third movie confirming whether or not Carrie ever had kids? No? Well. For now, at least, we’re glad to keep up with the real-life SJP’s navigating New York with a teenager and pre-teens in tow.
