There is nothing easy about blending two families together. Sadly, many of us are far more familiar with the Cinderella scenario than the Brady Bunch one. That’s why it’s so darn heart-warming to see how celebs like Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez have been integrating their kids into each other’s lives, even before they tie the knot. During her visit to Oprah’s 2020 Vision Tour with WW at The Forum in Los Angeles on Saturday, J.Lo gave us a peek into how their blended family worked from the start.
“I think they just started seeing him come around and little by little we kind of eased into it,” Lopez told Oprah, when asked if she told 12-year-old twins Emme and Max when she started dating the former New York Yankee.
“And then we went on a family trip so all the kids could be together, and that was a big step for us,” she continued. “That we talked to them about.”
It sounds like that means she repeatedly brought up his name and asked them if they liked him.
“What if they had said no we don’t?” Oprah asked.
“Then we would have had issues,” Lopez said. “Then I would have sat there and been like, ‘Why don’t you like him?’ I would have wanted to know… But it wasn’t that. They really liked him.”
Max was a big fan of A.Rod from the start, Lopez said.
“I remember this conversation with him — even though it’s … three years ago now — he said something like, ‘Alex is the only one who doesn’t ever get mad at me,’ ” she said. “Because Max is the one who gets in trouble in the house… [Alex] had so much patience with him because he’s all over the place and he’s the most beautiful boy and the most loving boy, but he will knock this over in a second… All you hear through the house is ‘Max!’ all the time. And Alex had this amazing patience with him.”
Living in a house full of women (Emme, J.Lo, and Rodriguez’s two daughters Natasha and Ella), it’s easy to picture the future stepfather and stepson having a special bond.
Speaking of that “step” prefix, we’ve also noticed that the kids are already throwing that term around, even though their parents have yet to set a wedding date.
“It was the coolest thing to watch my stepsister sing,” 15-year-old Natasha told Entertainment Tonight of J.Lo and Emme’s Super Bowl appearance. “I’m so proud of her every time I see her and her voice is just angelic.”
The couple and their kids have made it a point to share photos and videos of their time together. Rodriguez showed off a recent trip to the beach in celebration of the twins’ birthday last week.

“Happy Birthday Emme & Max!!!!!” he wrote on Instagram. “I’m so proud of both of you and so lucky to be a part of your life. I love you!”
Though they’ve been engaged since last May — and Lopez said she initially wanted to get married right away — it looks like they’ve been prioritizing forming their new family before making their marriage official. That includes coordinating co-parenting with the kids’ other parents, Cynthia Scurtis and Marc Anthony, which has been going well so far.
“The kids have a network of people who love, adore them, and want the best for them,” Lopez said. “We’ve been figuring it out as we go.”
While J.Lo waits to become one, let’s enjoy these other famous Hollywood stepmoms.
