Andrew Garfield Isn’t About To Let Societal Expectations About Having Kids Get Him Down

As kids, most adults had a whole life plotted out beat by beat. As any adult can tell you, however, things rarely line up as neatly as our younger selves imagined. Andrew Garfield knows this now more than ever. The actor revealed that of his entire family, he “always thought I would be the first to have kids and settle down, and they’re all shacked up and a couple of kids deep, for the most part.”

“I’m here with you, eating a burger, just contemplating existence. Trying to fill my days with as much nonsense as I possibly can. So that’s interesting. Releasing myself from the societal obligation of procreating by the time I’m 40 has been an interesting thing to do with myself,” Garfield said in a recent interview with British GQ.

As to why Garfield hasn’t had kids, he said it has been “more about accepting a different path than what was kind of expected of me from birth. Like, By this time you will have done this, and you will have at least one child – that kind of thing. I think I have some guilt around that.”

The Spider-Man actor acknowledged that as a man, the societal pressures of procreating aren’t as intense for him as it is for women. “And obviously it’s easier for me as a man,” he noted. When the interviewer noted there was still time for Garfield to become a father, the actor said he is just going with the flow.

“Life seems to be a perpetual practice of letting sh*t go. Letting go of an idea of how a thing should look, or be, or feel. And that one’s a big one [to let go of], because of course I would’ve loved my mum to have met my kids, if I’m going to have kids. And she will. In spirit. She’ll be there for it. I know she’s there, for all the big ones,” he said. Garfield’s mother passed away in 2019 from pancreatic cancer.

“But, yeah. Life, life, life. Life is in charge. We’ll see. We’ll see what happens. I’m curious,” he concluded. Seems like a healthy attitude to have, dad or not!

These celebrity moms all welcomed their bundles of joy after 40.
