Matthew McConaughey has been a movie star, a university professor, and a loving dad to his kids Levi, 14, Vida, 13, and Livingston, 10, with wife Camila Alves — but his latest work is making us swoon the most. The Gentleman star recently revealed that he wrote his first children’s’ book, and we are so excited! Listen, Matthew McConaughey could write a grocery list, and I would read it. But the fact that the Texas native’s latest project is actually a kids’ book somehow makes him even more of a dreamboat to moms everywhere. And speaking of dream, that’s actually how the idea came to him.
“I didn’t make plans to write a children’s book so much as the idea of Just Because came to me one night at 2:00 a.m. as a ditty in a dream,” McConaughey told PEOPLE on Feb. 9 about his debut kids’ book,Just Because,which is being published by Viking Children’s Books, an imprint of Penguin Young Readers.He also revealed that the book will touch on “life’s little complexities” through the wondering eyes of children.
The Dallas Buyers Club star added, “Hanging around my own children, seeing them first make sense of the world in black and white and then maturing into understanding the more subtle realities of life, I’ve seen them slowly realize the innuendos, context and poetry in people’s actions and feelings.”
He wrote a memoir, Greenlights, in 2020, and now he is turning to kids’ literature, which he thinks kids of all ages will enjoy. “I believe this book will resonate with children of all ages ‘just because’ it speaks to the kid in all of us,” he told PEOPLE.
McConaughey joins many other celebrities who have written kids’ books throughout the years, including his wife. She co-wrote a book about picky eaters, Just Try One Bite,in 2022, with Adam Mansbach, who wrote the popular Go the F*ck to Sleep.
“Do you have a picky eater in your life? So do I!” she wrote on Instagram about her book. “When I say, ‘picky eaters,’ you probably think of kids. But in my new book with @adammansbach, the parents are the picky ones who won’t eat their vegetables! If you have any picky eaters in your family, I think you’re going to love reading Just Try One Bite!”
Maybe next, the married couple will write a kids’ book together!
