While John F. Kennedy Jr seemed more than ready to welcome kids, his wife Carolyn Bessette was more on the hesitant side. While we know, thanks to a friend of hers who detailed a conversation they had with Jackie’s Girl: My Life With the Kennedy Family, author Kathy McKeon, that Bessette was hesitant to welcome children because of the paparazzi, there was more to the story.

In J. Randy Taraborrelli’s book The Kennedy Heirs, another friend of Bessette’s friends named Stewart Price said Bessette had another fear about starting a family with Kennedy: his family.

It seems as though Bessette was well aware of another kind of curse with the Kennedys: the ones where the wives seem to be pushed over. While many know about the Kennedy curse that surrounds the controversial family, where shocking and unexpected deaths and tragedies seem to follow them, but Bessette was worried about being a typical Kennedy wife as she put it.

“I see what goes on in the family, and it scares me,” she told Price, who quickly reminded her that she’s her own person, and not his other female family members.

“It’s a good thing, too. I know myself, and I’m definitely not that pathetic Kennedy wife who’ll stay home with the kids while her husband is out screwing around,” she said. “No. I’m that pissed-off Kennedy wife who’ll be in prison because she took matters into her own hands.”

Along with that, the timing never lined up for the pair.

For those who don’t know, the two met back in 1992, and didn’t start dating until 1994. They later wed in 1996, and tragically passed away in a private plane crash three years later in 1999.
