The FDA Recalls a Popular Fruit Puree Pouch for High Lead Levels & Urges Parents To Have Kids Tested

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) recalled the WanaBana apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches this weekend because they may contain elevated levels of lead. The FDA is recommending that parents and caregivers of children who may have had the pouches — no matter the lot number or expiration date — contact their child’s healthcare provider for a blood test.

Lead exposure is toxic to humans and can be difficult to notice in children without testing, per the FDA. That said, symptoms of short-term exposure can include headaches, abdominal pain, vomiting, and anemia. With long-term exposure, parents and caregivers may notice irritability, lethargy, fatigue, muscle aches or muscle prickling/burning, constipation, difficulty concentrating, headache, tremors, and weight loss.

The pouches were sold nationwide at multiple retailers such as Sam’s Club, Amazon, and Dollar Tree. People should not buy and offer these pouches to children. The FDA says it is working to remove contaminated pouches from the market.
