Beloved Friends alum Matthew Perry had plans to make a lot of changes in his life, and it’s all so heartbreaking to look back at following his tragic death this weekend. Last year, ahead of the release of his memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing, the actor spoke openly with Peopleabout his personal life.

He was going to open himself up to love and “not be scared by the things that used to scare him.” He said he was going to “feel more confident” and not leave relationships first because he thought whoever he was with was going to “annihilate” him.

And it wasn’t just romantic relationships he had on the brain. He told the outlet he also felt ready to have a family. He felt ready to be a dad.

“I think I’d be [a great dad],” he said. “I really do. I grew up with a lot of little kids around me, and that’s probably why, but I can’t wait.”

We’re sure he was right. And so it’s so gut-wrenching to read those words, knowing that dream of his won’t come to fruition. There won’t be a little “Baby Bing.”

Perry died Saturday at his Los Angeles home. His death is still under investigation, but it’s believed that the 54-year-old drowned in a jacuzzi.

“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of our beloved son and brother,” the actor’s family said in a statement. “Matthew brought so much joy to the world, both as an actor and a friend. You all meant so much to him and we appreciate the tremendous outpouring of love.”

And it really has been tremendous. Fans and loved ones have shared beautiful tributes and created a touching memorial outside the Friends apartment, honoring a life that impacted so many and was cut much too short.
