American Girl’s New Barbie-Inspired Doll Is Iconic Right Down to Her Tiny Painted Toenails

When Margot Robbie stepped out in the iconic black-and-white swimsuit outfit in Barbieand all the little girls started smashing their baby dolls, it sent chills up my arms. I remember what it was like playing with a grown-up doll who could let me pretend I was a supermodel or astronaut or Olympic gymnast — and not just a mom who stayed at home and took care of babies all day. But now, two of our favorite doll brands have collaborated for one epic Barbie-inspired American Girl Doll, and she’s going to change the way kids play with dolls again!

“A match made in Malibu! The dream collab is about to happen… 🌴✨” American Girl brand posted on Instagram earlier this week, along with a photo of the new Classic Barbie by American Girl Collector Doll next to the 1959 Classic Barbie.

The American Girl Doll is dressed in a black-and-white swimsuit covered in more than 450 Swarovski crystals. Her blonde hair is in a topknot ponytail with tiny, curled bangs and white sunglasses propped up on her head. She has blue eyes with winged black eyeliner and blue eyeshadow, which you can see when she closes her eyes. Her fingernails and toenails are painted bright red, which match her bold red lipstick. She even has a tiny pink “Barbie” tag around her wrist, like the original Barbie had. This collectible doll also comes with a stand to display her, for the first time ever for American Girl dolls.  

Many people commented on American Girl’s Instagram post, including the Barbie account, “Malibu ready 💕🌊.”

“Omg omg omg omg. I NEED HER. Like you don’t understand. Omg!!!! 🙌🙌🙌🙌” one person wrote.

Someone else said, “Thank you so much American Girl/Mattel for making dreams come true. This is one of the best dolls you have put together and I cannot wait to receive her. 🩷🩷🩷 thank you so much for all your time and effort going into this collaboration!!!! it literally is a dream come true!!!!!!”

Others weren’t quite as excited about the brand collab, especially since American Girl dolls are supposed to be modeled after little girls (while Barbie’s are adults). “Sorry AG, this is creepy. A nine year old body in a swimsuit and makeup. It gives toddlers in tiaras vibes and is 100% a full on cash grab and totally off-brand,” one person wrote.

They also complained about the $300 price and year-long waiting time. “I want her soooo so so bad, but I can’t drop $300 and then wait a whole year for my doll :(” someone else commented. It is a long time to wait.

If you are interested in these made-to-order dolls, you may have to wait even longer, unfortunately. They were released today and are already sold out online, although you can sign up for an email alert when they are back in stock.
