Every couple of seasons, the cast of The Crownhas changed to reflect the aging of the royal family through the decades. Between seasons 5 and 6, though, there was a quick casting change for a significant role: Prince William.
And it wasn’t a matter of age.
In season 5, Dominic West played Prince Charles alongside his son Senan, who played William. Pretty fitting, huh?
Well, Senan didn’t come back for season 6, and that was his father’s doing. Dominic — who shares Senan with wife Catherine FitzGerald — told Radio Times he didn’t want to do a film a pivotal part of the Netflix series with his teen.
“I didn’t really fancy doing the scene at Balmoral, telling a boy his mother has died,” Dominic said. “They invited Senan back because he did such a good job, and he was great, but I did slightly balk at that.”
They invited him back and his dad said no because he wouldn’t have “fancied” doing such a serious and emotional scene together? Are you kidding? It made him “slightly balk” so he made his son back away from a monumentous role?
“It was unfair of me because he did want to do it, but I wouldn’t have fancied that, to be honest,” he continued.
At least he realizes it’s unfair, but that’s too little too late. And too bad for poor Senan who “caught the attention of the show’s producers” with his audition tape. Rufus Kampa took over the role of Prince William for season 6 with no apparent balking from Dominic.
