For a parent, there’s nothing quite like the experience of watching their kids wake up on Christmas morning. Even if it’s way too early. Because c’mon, sleepyhead! It’s Christmas! The look of pure joy and wonder when they see what’s waiting for them under the tree is so heartwarming that I can’t even keep the smile off my face as I write this. And I don’t even celebrate Christmas! But I’ve seen the excitement and the magic and know how much it means to parents.
So we were heartbroken to hear that Patrick Mahomes will have to be away from his kids Sterling Mahomes, 2 and Bronze Mahomes, 1 on Christmas morning. The star quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs will be spending Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with his team at a hotel and then at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City as they prepare to play the Las Vegas Raiders at 1 p.m. EST.
“I’m a little disappointed I’m going to miss Christmas Eve with my kids and Christmas morning and miss Santa coming,” the NFL star told Pro Football Talk. “…I’ll be able to spend the evening with them and open presents with them then. So it’ll be a great opportunity. I’m excited for that.”
By nature of his job, with all the gamedays and traveling during the season, Mahomes has to miss a lot of time with his kids. But he wants them to understand that he uses this time to make a better life for them.
“When my kids grow up, I want them to see that dad wasn’t just gone just to be gone. I was gone doing something, to build, to be great,” he told CBS Mornings over the summer. “And so, whenever they get older, they can see how hard I worked.”
Christmas morning aside, Mahomes has gotten the chance to enjoy some festive traditions with his family. Earlier this month, wife Brittany Mahomes shared pictures of their family of four with Santa. And though they probably had a good time, the photos probably didn’t come out quite how they had hoped. In them, Sterling looks sad and Bronze looks incredibly confused.
“I love the kids’ matching pouty faces 😂,” one follower said.
“The kids’ faces – priceless.”
“Patrick looks more excited than the kids 🤣🤣”
At nighttime on Christmas — unlike in the photos — we’re sure the whole family will be grinning. Patrick will be so happy to be home with his kiddos, and they’ll be so excited to show off what Santa got them.
Although come to think of it, we wonder if the Mahomes family will pretend Christmas is a day earlier or a day later. Sort of like how the clocks magically change on New Year’s Eve so little kids can “be up at midnight.” Maybe the calendar will change too.
However they celebrate, we wish the First Family of Football a very Merry Christmas.
