Tom Brady Reveals the ‘Challenges’ & ‘Costs’ of Raising Kids in the Spotlight

In the latest episode of the Let’s Go! With Tom Brady, Larry Fitzgerald and Jim Gray, co-host Tom Brady and guest star John Legend bonded in a way we didn’t see coming. Because you wouldn’t think the twice-retired NFL quarterback and the singer have much in common. But what they lack in professional overlap, they make up for in their personal lives.

They’re both proud fathers. And while their experiences are different, they both know what it means to raise kids in the spotlight.

Brady has three kids — Jack, 16 who he shares with ex Bridget Moynahan, and Benjamin, 14 and Vivian, 11 who he shares with ex-wife Gisele Bündchen. He admitted that raising them in front of the world comes with “unique challenges.”

“When I’m out with my kids, I really wanna be with them, you know?” he said. “And I really make it clear to people, ‘Sorry, I’m just out here enjoying my time with my family, you know?’”

And as much as he loves going to his kids’ various events and extracurriculars, he feels painfully aware of how he and their moms could overshadow the experience.

“Whether I’m at a game for my son, and I love doing that, but, you know, a lot of times the attention gets shifted to us,” he said. “I don’t want to take away from their moments, ’cause this is [an] important part of their life and their maturation.”

That’s not to mention the disgusting bullying Bündchen said Benny faced earlier this year for not living up to his dad’s legacy in his own athletic endeavors. Seriously? Anyone shaming a 14-year-old for not being a perfect baseball player needs to reassess their life choices.

The constant attention (and probably the bullying) is what Brady considers one of the “costs” of stardom.

“The reason we get to go on a lot of fun vacations and you guys go to schools and have people to help [is because] we have to deal with some things that are different than everyone else,” he tells his kids. “So, there’s no straight arrow for anyone in life. Everyone’s gonna find different curves and turns and twists and trying to just be a great parent.”

Meanwhile, Legend is raising four adorable little ones — Luna, 7, Miles, 5, and babies Esti and Wren — with his wife Chrissy Teigen. It sounds like his kids haven’t noticed the downsides yet.

“[My kids] seem to take [my fame] well,” he said. “They take it in stride. They’re used to it now. They know that their mom and dad are famous.”

“They see billboards with my face on it for The Voice or for my Vegas residency or whatever and they’re just kind of used to it,” Legend continued. “My son, he’s my biggest fan. So, he listens to my music — literally, that’s it. I think they feel proud of me and proud of my music and proud that people love what I do and what my wife does.”

Hopefully that feeling of pride — that the Brady kids must feel too — continues, and both families can live as “normal” a life as possible. And yes, rude as it may seem, that might mean turning down adoring fans. Because, as both fathers will tell you, their kids are their priority. Which is exactly how it should be … famous or not!

These celebrity dads have the sweetest bonds with their daughters.
