Princess Charlotte’s Reported Role In the Royal Household Should Come As No Surprise

As an eldest daughter, I can relate to Princess Charlotte’s spot in her family. The 8-year-old is the middle sibling of Prince George, 10, and Prince Louis, 5, but as the eldest (and only!) daughter of Prince William and Kate Middleton, she has unsurprisingly taken on a leadership role as someone who keeps the rest of the family in line. At least, according to parenting expert and Supernanny star Jo Frost. She shared her thoughts on Princess Charlotte’s family role, and we aren’t surprised at all.

“Charlotte knows the rules. She’s the one in the middle. She knows how to keep everyone in good stead,” Frost recently told Hello! Magazine. Because of this, she’s likely to get on her older brother’s nerves, as he is next in line to the throne after his dad.

“There are moments when I’ve watched George and he’s looked over at his sister, and he’s probably annoyed with her one minute and then grateful that she’s there being able to remind him of things, when he’s taking it all in as well,” Frost continued. We can definitely see that too! Remember the time Charlotte made her brother switch seats with her so she could sit closer to their dad? Yeah, it’s easy to picture George getting annoyed with his little sis.

Frost isn’t the first one to see Charlotte as the glue to hold her siblings in line. After a royal event in June 2023, body language expert Judi James told Fabulous, “Charlotte told Louis to sit up while Kate leaned forward to straighten his tie. It’s very sweet to see how he responds quickly to orders from his sister.”

“The minute Charlotte told him to sit up in his seat he pulled up straight away with no murmur of dissent or argument,” she added.

It seems like Princess Charlotte just watches her mom and then uses the same tactics to keep her brothers behaving properly.“ When they got back into the carriage, we saw Charlotte mirroring Kate when it came to little Louis,” James continued. “As Louis sat between his two siblings, Charlotte watched Kate carefully, and when Kate leaned forward to speak to her small son, it was Charlotte immediately using one hand to signal that he should budge up in the seat.”

Frost also opened up about how she sees the Prince and Princess of Wales raising their kids. “I think really what we’re seeing is awareness,” Frost told Hello! “Prince George and Princess Charlotte are being informed, certainly George, our future King. He’s no doubt started learning little bits here and there. He has the wonderful example of looking up to his grandfather and his father from a young age.”

“They’re raised with an understanding of royal procedures and protocols. And they’re raised to understand, there’s a time and a place,” she continued.

Frost explained that all the children are reportedly being treated as equals.

“I think William and Catherine understand the importance of nurturing the sibling relationships between the three of them,” she said. “Dare I say it, in their family, it would never be the ‘heir and spare’. It would be about the importance of all of them. The understanding that it really takes a team, with the important roles in upholding the crown and the monarchy. And so, we’re seeing these very early seeds now, with respect to what it means to support each other and to nurture together.”

They are clearly doing a good job — my own brothersdon’t take quite as kindly to my critiques or nudges as Charlotte’s brothers do, and they’re adults!
