New Heights may be the top sports podcast globally (!!!), but we rarely tune in just for the color commentary. Because the show is about so much more than just the NFL…it’s about family. *Collective ‘Aw’ from the audience*
The Kelce family, that is. The beloved podcast is hosted by brothers Travis Kelce and Jason Kelce, and each week, listeners are fed fabolous tidbits about the football stars’ personal lives. We learned that Travis was a “leash kid.” And we wondered, “Why didn’t Jason bring jeans for Jason?”
And the newest episode was no exception. Jason got incredibly candid about fatherhood in the “No Dumb Questions” segment. A listener asked, “If you could have only five apps on your smartphone, what would they be?”
“I would have no apps and I would throw my phone into a volcano of magma because I hate how much I’m on my phone,” Jason said, while Travis laughed at his brother’s anger.
“I hate everything to do with my phone,” he continued. “I’m addicted to it, I can’t stand it.”
Woah! Some strong words from the Philadelphia Eagles center. Travis pushed back, reminding his brother that he uses his phone to “gain knowledge.” Jason conceeded, saying he does like the knowledge but not the distraction.
“I hate when my kid tells me to put down my phone because it lets me know how bad of a parent I’m being,” he said. “When your own daughter says, ‘Daddy, put down your phone,’ do you know how much that cuts into your soul and lets you know how sh*tty of a parent you’re being?”
Oof. The pain was written all over Jason’s face when he said that. Because being called out on your screen time by your kid?! What an upsetting role reversal.
“Uncle Travvy” thought it was hilarious, though, and had a suggestion for Jason.
“Next time she says that can you just screenshot what you’re looking at?” the tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs asked.
Which could be a good wakeup call. (“Woah, the last three times my daughter asked me to put my phone down I was looking at X, Y, and Z.”) But Travis was probably asking so that he could laugh at whatever ridiculous thing Jason thought was more important than fully focusing on his daughters — Wyatt, 4, Elliotte, 2, and Bennett, 10 months who he shares with wife Kylie Kelce.
And same! We want to know what one of the Sexiest Men Alive is scrolling through.
“It’s going to be nonsense,” Jason said before reconsidering. “No, it’ll probably be a crossword puzzle on the New York Times because I do love those for some reason.”
Other celebrities have spoken out about their personal screen time usage and how it impacts their relationship with their kids. In Oct. 2023, actress Kristen Bell reshared a moving post from Dr. John Delony on her Instagram story
“Look your children in their eyes,” the post said. “As soon as you hear their voice, put down your phone and look them in their eyes.”
“Even if you just have to tell them that you need some time to finish a project, read an email, or send a text,” Delony continued. “But don’t talk to a child without making eye contact. Your children deserve more respect and dignity than a fancy metal box.”
Now you have your marching orders, Jason! If you don’t end up throwing your phone in a volcano of magma, take a screenshot and then look your girls in the eyes as soon as they speak to you mid-scroll.
