Drew Barrymore may have come to fame by being a child actor, but that’s not what she wants for her kids. The E.T. actress found some (maybe unexpected) validation to that point when chatting with actress Andie MacDowell on The Drew Barrymore Show yesterday. Barrymore opened up, saying that her 9-year-old daughter Frankie recently told her she wants to be an actress when she grows up.
“I said, ‘Okay. I will support you and help you in any way I can,’” Barrymore said. “You know I won’t let them now, they have to be kids and grow up.”
“I did the same thing,” MacDowell said. The Groundhog Day star shares daughters Margaret, 29 and Rainey, 34 and son Justin, 38 with ex-husband Paul Qualley. Both Margaret and Rainey have followerd in their mom’s footsteps, but that didn’t happen until later in their lives.
“Oh so I’m doing it right,” said Barrymore, who also shares Olive, 11 with ex-husband Will Kopelman.
“I think so,” MacDowell said, before launching into a story about a young Barrymore.
The First Time They Met
“I remember the first time I saw you … You came to a party, you were a child. You came to the St. Elmo’s Fire party.”
After some back and forth, they realized that, at the time, MacDowell was in her mid-twenties and Barrymore was 10.
“‘What were you doing there?’ I remember thinking that,” MacDowell said. Barrymore said she was “partying” and later added the fun tidbit that her first dance was with actor Emilio Estevez — who is in love with MacDowell in St. Elmo’s Fire — at a birthday party for Rob Lowe. What?!
“I don’t know about you,” MacDowell continued, “but I’ve worked with kids and it’s really a job. I just wanted [my kids] to have whatever a normal life is.”
“Everything you’re saying is making me feel so validated for my choices.”
The Next Generation
Just over a year ago, MacDowell became a grandma when her son Justin and his partner Nicolette welcomed a baby girl. She told the co-hosts of Today that she and her granddaughter have a “soul-to-soul connection.”
“I’ve never had someone look into me and see my soul like that,” she said.
That was certain. What was still up in the air was what the star of Hallmark’s The Way Home would be called.
“I haven’t decided — she can’t speak yet,” MacDowell said. “I’m gonna give her time. I’m thinking Nana or Grandma … Not Granny!”
